Synovial Collection: Redefining Interaction in Jewelry

A New Level of Playability and Personalization

The Synovial Collection, designed by Andrea Torrone, introduces a fresh perspective on traditional jewelry by prioritizing interaction and personalization. This innovative collection embraces the rise of affordable jewelry while offering a tactile and visual experience that encourages an ironic interpretation of the jewels.

With the extreme digitalization of human actions, there is a growing need for more genuine interactions. Torrone found inspiration in the study of movements and manipulability, leading to the main inspiration for the Synovial Collection: the Synovial joints. These joints, commonly found in the human body, allow for intuitive movements and serve as the basis for the collection's design.

The Synovial Collection consists of three necklaces and bracelets that aim to introduce new levels of interaction between the user and the product. The magnetic closure design allows users to play with the components, creating different configurations and making the jewels personal and close to the wearer. This unique feature sets the collection apart from others in the market.

Each item in the collection is made using a combination of materials and production techniques. The components are crafted from Cellulose Acetate, a biopolymer that offers great texture variability. The closure components in Acetate also contain a Neodimium magnet, enabling the playful interaction. The other half of the components are made of ferromagnetic Iron alloy, produced through centrifugal casting and electroplating treatment. These production processes ensure industrial mass production feasibility, low equipment costs, and advantageous cycle times.

The Synovial Collection's necklaces measure 180mm x 180mm x 25mm (WxDxH), while the bracelets measure 80mm x 80mm x 15mm (WxDxH). The dimensions are carefully designed to provide comfort and style for the wearer.

Thanks to the magnetic properties of the closure components, the necklaces and bracelets offer a unique interactive experience. Users can play and fidget with the jewels, generating simple movements such as scrolling, orbital rotation, and pivot rotation. This customization allows for different configurations, and the beads can be easily separated from the wire and substituted with variants of different textures and colors.

The Synovial Collection was developed during the Final Synthesis course at Politecnico di Milano in Milan, Italy. The project began in October 2017 and concluded in January 2018. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to analyze trends in the jewelry market. The goal was to identify unexplored innovation areas and design products for the future. The resulting collection aligns with the growth of the affordable luxury sector and incorporates gamification elements to offer a pleasant and engaging experience for consumers.

By reimagining the concept of classical jewels, the Synovial Collection challenges traditional notions of jewelry and introduces a new way of interacting with these personal adornments. With its emphasis on playability and fidgeting, this collection creates a stronger connection between users and their jewelry, allowing for a more personalized and enjoyable experience.
